Another Game Idea

It’s been a bad week. My father-in-law died unexpectedly after becoming ill with something fairly minor, which somehow snowballed into something very serious, which resulted in his actual death. Unbelievable.

We miss him and have to carry on as best we can.

I started storing my Marvel Champions hero cards in little cassette tapes, which looks awesome. I just need to print off some comic book art for the covers and it will be complete.

Keeping with the tabletop games theme, I have been slowing down my purchases. I think I have become more of a collector than a player, and I still want to complete my collection of Arkham Horror, Marvel Champions, and The Lord of the Rings LCGs. However I have only pre-ordered two games that are yet to arrive: Deep Regrets and Star Trek Captain’s Chair.

Captain’s Chair looks really engaging, whereas Deep Regrets is an ironic title, as I do have regrets about backing it on Kickstarter. I have never done that before, and will never do it again. I assumed we would get the game cheaper than retail, but that is not the case. In fact I have probably spent 40% more on the game than I would if I just waited for it to be in stock at Zatu.

I also don’t even want it anymore. I may just sell it as soon as it arrives.

But I am also looking at getting The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era 👀

So, yeah, totally not going overboard this year1.

In other news I was having the idea about having the idea of making a game again. I had a quick go using Godot the other day and it seems pretty easy to get going with it.

The trouble is, as always, I do not have any idea of what I would make.

Perhaps I could resurrect Retrograde Online and just ditch all the React stuff and use Godot instead?

I was also conscious of something I read the other week which rang true2 for me. It was something like the desire to return to games from the past is not for the games themselves, but for how you felt at the time you initially played them. But those times are over and will never come back again, and all those experiences are lost to time.

Creating a game that is like the games you used to play is probably a waste of time, and a better alternative might be to just embrace the new world and craft a game that is a blend of the old and new.

Who knows.

Anyway, I am back thinking about something to waste my time on.

Speaking of which, I started watching The Traitors Series One. It’s from 2022 and I have always been late to the party, but it’s also nice to not have to avoid the internet for fear of things being spoiled for me.
